Memorization and learning of Quran is not something that will be uniform across all the people. One should remember to take into account the different capacities of children vary from one another in their abilities to memorize and perfect (their assignments), work hard, and persistence.
Some of them may not have the ability to memorize the entire Qur’an. A child may find it to be a very difficult task, solely because he does not possess the necessary skills.
Parents should realize that memorizing the entire Qur’an is a communal obligation. As such, they should not force their children to memorize the entire Qur’an, thus requiring of them what Allah has not required.
Many parents may do so unintentionally. They want what is best for their children and for themselves by making their children memorize the Qur’an.
Yet, they end up using harsh or brutal methods in order to force their children to memorize the Qur’an, using heir neighbors, relatives, and friends as their examples.
This approach will have dangerous consequences. It may cause the child to rebel and go astray. It may even cause the child to end up hating the Qur’an, may Allah forbid.
So, if we as parents exert our efforts and take all the means to help our children memorize the Qur’an, doing so with encouragement and positive influence, as mentioned previously, yet we still do not get the desired result, then we should aim for a minimal level.
The minimal level is that the child is able to recite the Qur’an proficiently, articulately, and melodiously.
This is obligatory upon every Muslim; I mean learning how to recite the Qur’an properly and melodiously with tajweed.
We should still have him memorize as much as possible from the various soorahs of the Glorious Qur’an, such as: Yaa Seen, al-Kahf, Tabaarak, al-Waaq’iah, Juz Amma, Aayat al-Kursee, the ends of Soorah al-Baqarah and Soorah al-Hashr, as well as other soorahs and verses.
For that which cannot be completely attained, should not be completely abandoned, and everything that goes beyond its Limit, will end up in the opposite extreme.
